A Friend's Timely Word John Spice
A number of years ago, a colleague and close personal friend wrote an excellent article describing school choice, the distinctives of a Christian education, and the clash of values between the home and culture in which we live. I believe it also describes the shared values we have here at CDS. The article is reprinted below with his permission.
Educating at the intersection: Family values and Christian faith
-Boyd Chitwood
This was a city leadership class which had spent the day studying education - mostly public - but was including private schools as a "choice." They were a gracious group and I appreciated the opportunity, but I did try to offer some thoughts about something more than a personal choice alone. We know we won't be the school for everyone - we won't and shouldn't be everyone's choice -- but the mission we pursue is about more than offering one more in a menu of educational alternatives.
Education, at least since Plato, has been understood to be done on a foundation of shared values. It has been distinguished as something different from training, which is somewhat value-neutral. To educate a child is not just to teach skills; it is to pass on to them a worldview and values. I tried to help the Chamber group understand how this doesn't have to be a narrow process of indoctrination, but is instead a deep and diverse process of growing a critical thinker.
Everyone teaches by starting somewhere, with values and worldview included in that somewhere. The mature student who has been encouraged as a thinker will be able to recognize and choose for him or herself to own a set of beliefs and convictions. Teaching from a Christ-centered worldview, we are confident that a Biblical stance best stands the test of a good thinker's consideration and most will choose to engage it for themselves.
Our society is struggling with how to educate children without having to default to a least common denominator of shared values. The radical pluralism and even disintegration of our culture leaves little that is truly shared as a set of values. I think school choice and charter schools are honest attempts to build school community around more than that least common denominator.
Here at our school, we aren't left with the least for our foundation of shared values. We have significant diversity in our school community, but we also enjoy a mission-specified agreement on a substantial set of values and beliefs. That is, theoretically, a much stronger environment in which to educate than a plurally public school, or even than a separately secular, independent school.
But the rubber meets the road when we put that theory into practice. It's not just about having a doctrinal statement for the school that we uphold and teach according to. That is absolutely necessary, but it takes a real life application, also. As families in a school community, we have to be working for most of the same things in our kids' lives. We have to be in their lives - reading and praying and playing with our 3rd grader; talking and arguing and 'homework helping' and committing time to our 7th grader; keeping track of and caring about and advising and respecting and still disciplining our 10th grader.
Expecting respect and committing to deserve it from our children. Supporting authority while talking privately to a teacher with whom we have a question. Recognizing and praying through our own anger or frustration or jealousy or whatever in relation to another parent, a teacher, another student, our boss, or whoever - not blindly sharing these same attitudes with our children. Knowing our children's friends and their parents and committing to support each other in raising them well.
Our children weren't made in the same mold by God, so none of them will turn out the same. There is much unique about our teaching and parenting of each child. But there is also much in common about working with each child. The Lord hasn't left us without guidance and command. Let's encourage each other in that hard, high calling of being a good mom or dad. We'll grow stronger as a school, too. |
